The Japanese 18th Division struck along the south coast of Singapore Island. Although it suffered during the first four days of fighting, it was spurred on by the thought of the 5th Division reaching Singapore first. The garrison’s defences were strong along the southern Pasir Panjang Ridge, which was held by the 1st Malaya Regiment and Australian carriers. Nevertheless capture of the coastal guns and control of the air ensured Japanese victory.

Much to the humiliation of the British Army, in mid-February 1942 General Percival surrendered with the loss of 80,000 Australian, British and Indian troops who were captured. They joined another 50,000 taken during the Malayan Campaign. The Japanese victory, thanks to their tenacity, tanks and bombers, had been swift and mirrored the German Blitzkrieg in Europe.
